Purdue vs. Minnesota Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 7:00pm EST

The No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers seek a fifth consecutive win on Thursday when they tip off against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Gophers, meanwhile, are coming off a loss and have just two wins in their previous five games.

Purdue hits the court hoping to extend their winning streak and hand the Golden Gophers a loss for the second time this season. These teams previously played in early December, and Purdue blew the doors off Minnesota 89-70. The Boilermakers shot over 50 percent from the field, 41% from downtown and nearly 90% from the charity stripe. Zach Edey led the offensive charge with 31 points and an absurd 22 rebounds. He was one of four players to score in double digits.

Given that Purdue beat Minnesota a month back by 19, the spread of 14 points feels very doable. This is despite Purdue’s questionable ATS record of 3-8-1 in its previous 12 games. The spread was 19 the last time these two teams played, and it pushed.

The Golden Gophers have a slew of issues, including injuries and a general lack of talent. Because of this, Minnesota is just 1-5 straight up in conference play, with a 70-67 win over Ohio State as its lone victory. The Gophers’ record against the spread in conference games is better at 3-2, but it is still hard to trust the worst basketball team in the Big Ten. Their only conference win came against the second-worst team, while Purdue leads the Big Ten over Rutgers.

There is hope for this team to keep covering spreads with a 3-1 ATS record in their previous four conference games. However, injuries are becoming an issue for a team lacking depth. Isaiah Ihnen and Parker Fox are already out for the season with knee injuries while Jamison Battle is questionable with a back injury.

In conference play, Purdue is just 3-3-1 against the spread, but I like them to put up another big night against Minnesota and cover this time around. The Golden Gophers already lost once by 19 to the Boilermakers and haven’t gotten any better in the interim.

Purdue hasn't been on a great stretch against the spread, but Minnesota is 1-7 ATS in their last eight home games. I think the stylistic advantages favoring the Boilermakers will be more than enough for them to cover. College Basketball Pick BET ON Purdue -13.5 .
